"Rewriting" a Dilbert strip

 A couple strips that were prompted after reading a "Dilbert" Sunday comic.

I used his initial premise from the first panel, and then "rewrote" it for my characters, and from my perspective.

Been awhile...

 Playing around with a more "action adventure" style...

I'm actually thrilled with how well the technique works - the kind of shading I'm getting from this art pencil, and its ability to take watercolor as well.

Need to work on improving my basic drawing/ anatomy skills a bit, but such is the cartoonist's life, eh?

"So it goes," as they say.

Aside from technique - there is a "message" behind this piece, although I won't bore you with a full explanation. Basically, the idea sprang from hearing people say that they're not bothered by masks or other restrictions - that they could "live this way for the rest of their lives."

It struck me as how a petulant child behaves, when sentenced to some punishment like being made to sit in the corner. When the time is up, he declares, why, he LIKES sitting in the corner! He'll stay there BEYOND the time limit even. Just to assert that's it's his "choice," his independent agency in the matter - not some submission to a tyrannical dictate.

Of course it's complicated with the "health mandates," because these are supposed to be "for your own good" in a different sense than a child's punishment. But nevertheless.

"Dreams of an Ambien Addict"

 First long form comic strip I've done in a while.. Slight homage to the legendary Winsor McCay, who drew "Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" back in the early 20th century. The idea was that every strip was a dream sequence, and at the end the dreamer would wake up fitfully, saying that he was going to swear off "Welsch rarebit" forever, after the nightmares it gave him. I was always a bit unclear on what "rarebit" might be... Some sort of disgusting rabbit stew, referred to in the dialect of the people who invented it? But later I learned it's some kind of disgusting moldy cheese... (I think. Welsch rarebit experts please correct me : ))

This "cartoon" has proven a little confusing to many... Just trying to satirize inspirational messages. Not sure it quite accomplished that.

Gag Notes:  My original idea for this was going to have the cartoonist going "full-Arno", i.e. Peter Arno, a classic gag cartoonist of the 40s and 50s. And drawn in his style, not Larson's. But then I realized that only a handful of middle-aged lunatics obsessed with vintage cartoon art would get the joke, so... decided to make it somebody more people are familiar with :)
